Chief Christopher Kingdom Ghomorai
The Leader Moves On.....
|
My father was a wonderful man. He was a good father, dependable and kindhearted to one and all. He was also the most generous person I knew. He once told me that God has given everyone at least one talent. For some people, it is the ability to sing beautifully, others to preach, but for him, it was the ability to give and he did. He gave constantly, without inhibition.
Daddy was also a good listener. There isn't a problem I had that he couldn't
help me with and although he is gone, I will always have the lessons he
taught me. It is terribly hard to say goodbye. Instead, I'll say till we
meet again daddy, fare thee well.

Chris Ghomorai was a great man. This is a fact I am sure many would agree to. The greatness of this man is not being measured in material wealth of one sort or the other. Rather, the greatness here is measured by the size of his heart.
My father Chief Chris Ghomorai, had a heart of gold. He loved to give and
in a strange way loved to take as well. He loved to give to people, no
matter their stance in society, a chance at an improved life, a second
chance to do better in life and above all, the tool for improved living.
This tool simply refers to education. I was once told that the best thing
you can do for a man is not to aid him financially, but rather give him
knowledge. My father was a strong believer in the importance and neccessity
of a solid education and he always did the best he could to give this.
As mentioned earlier, he also loved to take. This simply refers to the
fact that he loved to take as his own, the problems of his family, friends
and the Ijaw Nation as a whole. He was always the one to come to when in
need of a way out or just advice of some sort. He cared for the problems
of all and treated every matter with love and respect. As far as I am concerned,
this shows an attribute of a truly great man. This shows some of the attributes
of the great Chief Chris Ghomorai, my father.
May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace.
Tienador Ghomorai

Everyone's best friend. A man of principles. A man of culture. The most welcoming soul. He used every opportunity to teach everyone. He spent his life preparing for eternity. An extremely selfless heart. He never needed two shirts on his back. His investment in my life and in others will last forever.
Dear Chris Ghomorai, it was a pleasure. I thank God for giving me the privilege
of being your daughter. May I make you proud as you have made your family,
frinds and colleagues proud. You may be physically gone, but nothing can
take your presence in my heart and mind away.
Rest in the Lord. You've earned it.

The Man with a
great passion for Ijaw Nation
TRIBUTE TO CHIEF CHRIS
GHOMORAI
The beauty of a flower is never seen until the seed
cracks, germinates and flourishes before its fascinating colour blossom in the
eyes of the beholder. The fragrance of flour is not appreciated until it is
pollinated and helped by the cool nice breeze.
Such was the case of a handsome young man who by
destiny came into the family of late Amakosiowei of Kabowei Kingdom, Pa Akpovi
Ghomorai of Egonifia family in Ekise No. 2 Quarter of Patani community in Delta
state, and late Madam Malanti Ghomorai (nee Tawari) of Okologbosi in Asamabiri
Town of Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State almost six decades
ago.
Going by name Christopher Kingdom Ghomorai, he
was a fine scholar who lived all his life in the quest of serving his fatherland
as he made people of all class of life to love and adore him. A brilliant and an
intelligent man whose light glowed maximally, Chief Chris Ghomorai marched into
a career for the strong, bold and courageous people of his time. A man of
consummate skill, immense scholarship, humane and candid he was the National
Vice President of Ijaw National Congress (INC) whose laughter was contagious,
his anger an electric shock, but great were his soothing and pleasant words to
get issues straightened out.
A Nationalist with great passion for the Niger
Delta course, late Chief Chris Ghomorai passed on to the great beyond as a
result of a ghastly auto crash that precisely occurred at the early hours of
Saturday December 20, 2008 on the Ohoro-Patani axis of the East-West road in
Delta state, on his way to Ogbia in Bayelsa state, where he was supposed to
attend the Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting of the INC to finalize
preparations for the Ijaw National Congress (INC) General elections scheduled
for January 10, 2009.
In the entourage with him were Elder Dominic
Aboro who was also an Ijaw Nationalist and his cousin, then Mr. Robinson
Ogunkoru, INC Organizing Secretary and Mr. Pereowei Dudoh his driver.
As an eye witness account explained, his car had
a head-on collusion with another car whose occupants were lecturers of the Niger
Delta University believed to be coming from Yenegoa the Bayelsa State capital in
the opposite direction.
Fatal accident it was!!! Elder Dominic Aboro died
on the spot along with the occupants of the other car, while Chris Ghomorai was
seriously injured and was rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital
(UBTH), Benin City in Edo State, where he lost the battle for life at about
1.00am Sunday December 21, 2008.
He was initially rushed to a private hospital at
Ughelli in Delta State, but when news of the accident got to Governor Emmanuel
Uduaghan of Delta state, he immediately directed his commissioner for health,
Dr. J. Otumara, to step in and personally take charge and co-ordinate activities
to save his life.
Bayelsa State government, through the Deputy
Governor was also said to have provided ambulance and other services to save the
life of the INC leader Chief Chris Ghomorai who was said to be returning from
the burial ceremony of the father-in-law of Honourable Peremobowei Ebebi.
Incidentally, the dead lecturers were also going for the same ceremony that he
was returning from. While his driver Mr. Pereowei Dudoh too gave up the ghost
some days after, Mr. Ogunkoru, the other occupant in Chief Ghomorai’s car was
recently discharged from Hospital.
An administrator and business executive of
repute, Chief Chris Ghomorai was born on January 12, 1949 in Patani in the then
Western region now Delta state. He attended St. Anthony Primary School,
Asamabiri in the then Western region now Sagbama LGA in Bayelsa state 1954-1958.
He later traveled to Ghana and attended Ghana International School Accra Ghana,
where he spent only three months at the School between September and December
1962. He returned to Nigeria to attend Ibadan Boys High School between February
and December 1963 and ended up at International School University of Ibadan,
between January 1964 and June 1967.
From 1967-1968, he attended Bryaston School
Blandford, Dorset in the United Kingdom England and sat for his ‘A’ Levels in
1968.
Young Ghomorai got admission to pursue his
university education by joining the premier University of Ibadan in 1968
graduating with a B.Sc (Hon.) Zoology degree in 1972. He later got an MBA from
the University of Lagos in 1976.
Chris Ghomorai as a young graduate taught briefly
in Bomadi Grammar School, Bomadi in the then Mid-West State. Today, that part of
the defunct Mid-West is now Delta State. Thereafter, his first port of call to
work was at Ethiope Publishing Corporation in Benin City, where he served as
Production Editor from August 1973 to July 1974, then Literamed Publications
Ltd, Lagos as Production Manager from 1977 to April 1978.
In October 1978, he joined the Daily Times of
Nigeria Ltd., Lagos as Deputy General Manager, Times Press Ltd., Lagos and left
in October 1982 for R.T.Briscoe Nigeria Ltd., Lagos where he was Head and
Manager of Graphics Department. After about three years with the company, Chris
resigned his appointment and took up appointment as Head of Administration with
the International Merchant Bank IMB, Lagos in August 1985 and later Manager
Treasury Department in 1988.
He served in that capacity till November 1990
when he was called to higher service as Commissioner of Finance and Economic
Planning with the defunct Bendel State Public service. When Delta state was
created, he continued to maintain the office of Finance Commissioner in the new
state till January 1992.
Until his death recently, he was the Managing
Director of Basner Consult and Executive Chairman of Afromex Dredging and
Construction Company Ltd.
The death of Chief Chris Ghomorai is a colossal
loss to the Ijaw Nation and the nation in general but the people of Kabowei
Kingdom and Patani Local Government Area in particular. For as a man of many
colours not only was he an Administrator and business Executive of repute he was
also a great politician, Ijaw Leader, quiet philanthropist, intellectual, banker
and a crusader for justice particularly in the Ijaw struggle for
self-determination, justice, fairness and equity as Vice President, Chief Chris
Ghomorai was a very active voice in the Niger Delta struggle.
As a politician, he seemed to have imbibed the
philosophy of “the greatest president that Nigeria never had” the late sage and
leader of the old Action Group (AG) Chief Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo. Like the
late sage Chief Chris Ghomorai was a political icon who never compromised his
political principles, ever faithful and steadfast in what he believed in and
presented his views in such an innocuous manner that you can only disagree with
him but not fail to understand him.
As commissioner for Finance in the then Military
Administration of B/Gen. John E. Yeri (rtd) he was Chairman of the 1.5%
Derivation Fund of the defunct Bendel State. Chief Chris Ghomorai played a vital
role in the award of contract and execution of the Patani Electrification
project which eventually connected the Local Government headquarters and its
environs to the National Grid. The Leader as he is fondly called in political
circles, also played a vital role in the establishment of the Boys Model
Secondary School, Patani by the defunct Bendel State Government. Chief Chris
Ghomorai solely influenced the sitting of the flood protection project in
Patani, which was executed by Nigerian Dredging and Marine (NDM) Nig. Ltd. The
late Chief’s contribution to the political life of the old Bomadi and Patani
Local Government Areas in particular cannot be over-emphasized. There is no
gainsaying the fact that virtually none of the present day political leaders in
Patani Local Government Area could write the history of his or her own political
success story without mentioning of the name Chris Ghomorai.
No less highly remarkable was his philanthropic
character. Indeed his philanthropic activities knew no bounds, especially in the
area of youth’s empowerment through education apart from direct financial
assistance to needy individuals and organizations. A good number of young men
and women owe their Secondary and University Education to Chief Chris
Ghomorai.
His contributions to the maintenance of peace
and security were not limited to his Local Government Area but cut across the
entire Niger Delta. For instance, Chief Chris Ghomorai was a High Chief in
Egbema Clan in Edo State in recognition of his service in this
direction.
A strong believer in justice, fairness and
equity Chief Chris Ghomorai was among the Founding Fathers of the Ijaw National
Congress (INC). He was one of the pillars that gave both moral and financial
support to the formation of the organization and many other socio-cultural
organizations including the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), the moribund Patani Youths
Association (PYA) and a host of others.
Indeed so committed was the late Chief to the
Ijaw struggle for justice and fair-play in the Nigerian Federation that his
eventual emergence as the National Vice President of the INC did not come as a
surprise to all Ijaw sons and daughters both at home and abroad, a post he held
until his death in active service on Sunday 21st December, 2008. Records also
have it that he was once National Organizing Secretary of the Ijaw National
Congress (INC).
Chief Chris Ghomorai was a devout Catholic and
wedded to Barrister (Mrs.) Victoria Ghomorai (nee Akangbou). They are blessed
with six children (Timendu, Tarela, Tonbra, Tokoni, Tienador and Tonye).
“The Leader” will surely be missed mostly by his
immediate family, the Kabowei kingdom where he had played prominent role by
positively touching and uplifting the people’s economic and socio-political
status including the entire Ijaw nation spanning from Ondo, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa,
Rivers and Akwa-Ibom states and also Nigeria state in general.
Like all mortals Chris fell to the icy hands of
death at a time the Ijaw nation needed his expertise most.
Chris Ghomorai worked and died toiling for Ijaw
emancipation; this was the centrepiece of his passion for humanity. He was a
champion of the Niger Delta struggle and appreciative of God’s goodness and
mercies throughout his life.
So far the burial arrangement for the late
Leader has been slated for the second week of the month March 2009, starting
from Wednesday March 11, 2009 there will be a Public Lecture organized by
friends and Associates of late Hon. Chief Chris Ghomorai in honour of the great
leader. The venue of the Public Lecture is Petroleum Training Institute at Warri
Delta State, this will be followed with a Service of song at his residence in
Benin on Thursday March 12 then on Friday March 13, 2009 there will be an Open
Air Service Mass at his home town Patani Delta state and interment follows
immediately at his Ogonifia family compound in Ekise Quarter, Patani
Further enquiries on the burial programme could
be channeled through Chief (Hon.) C.F.Abeki 08080488026 Chairman Late Chief
Chris Ghomorai Family Burial Committee; Mr. Fresh Ugboma 07088795235 and
Presidor Ghomorai 08038028225 all members of the committee.
Adieu Leader, may his gentile soul rest in perfect peace.

So it is true that Chris Ghomorai is dead? I just can't believe it
at all. I dealt with Chris when I was the President of the Ijaw Peoples
Association (IPA) of Great Britain and Ireland, and I found him to be a man of
great integrity, and a total believer in the Ijaw Cause; a great and committed
writer on our issues. The Ijaw Nation have lost an Illustrious son.
It is
a sad day for all of us. He will be sadly missed by all those who knew him as
well as all those that read his paper and writings.
God has given and God

By Agency Reporter
Published: Monday, 22 Dec 2008
The Vice-President, Ijaw National Congress, Chief Chris Ghomorai, died on
Sunday in a car crash.
Ghomorai, a former commissioner in the defunct Bendel State and the pioneer
commissioner for Finance in Delta State, passed on at the University of Benin
Teaching Hospital in the early hours of Sunday as a result of injuries he
sustained in a car crash along Warri/Port Harcourt Highway on Friday.
It was learnt that while five persons died on the spot in the accident,
Ghomorai, who sustained serious injuries, was rushed to UBTH for medical
attention.
Our correspondent gathered that medical personnel in UBTH lost the battle to
safe his life in the early hours of Sunday.
Investigation by our correspondent showed that Ghomorai in company of four of
his kinsmen, were travelling to Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State, for INC’s
meeting before the accident.
It was learnt that Ghomorai’s car collided with another vehicle coming from
the opposite direction along the pot-hole riddled East/West Highway.
Tributes poured- in, in his honour as the report of the tragic development
filtered into the region on Sunday morning

Sylva said “It was with a great sense of loss that I heard of the death of
the illustrious Ijaw leader and the four lecturers of our university. I want to
let you know that you have my greatest sympathy and my heart is truly
saddened.”
The governor said, “Chief Ghomorai was not just a great leader of the Ijaw
and the Niger Delta, he was always so compassionate and accommodating of other
ideas that we always welcomed seeing him at every opportunity.”
“His passing will not only leave a void in our lives and in the hearts of all
those who knew him, it will also leave an empty space in the heart of the Niger
Delta at this critical stage of our transition.” On the four lecturers of Niger
Delta University, Sylva said, “they will always remain in our hearts.
Their contributions to the development of this citadel of learning in the
Niger Delta heartland will always stand as a memorial to their good lives and
works.”
While explaining death as a necessary end of every living soul, the governor
prayed God to give the families of the deceased the strength to bear the
